Ingredients

Cabbage

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for sautéing vegetables
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey) choose your preferred protein
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional) for added heat
  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped (about 4 cups)
  • 1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese for topping

Instructions

  • Prepare the cabbage by removing the outer leaves, cutting it into quarters, removing the core, and chopping it into bite-sized pieces.
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Add ground beef or turkey to the skillet, breaking it apart and cooking until browned, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  • Season the meat with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes. Stir in chopped cabbage, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well.
  • Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, cover with aluminum foil, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the foil, sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
