Potatoes
- 4 large russet potatoes Peeled and thinly sliced (about 2 pounds)
- 1 medium onion Thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream This is the base of your creamy sauce
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese For that delicious cheesy flavor
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds a nice depth of flavor
- 1 teaspoon salt Enhances all the other flavors
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper For a little kick
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg A secret ingredient that adds warmth
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter For greasing the baking dish
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional) For an extra cheesy topping
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel and thinly slice the russet potatoes, aiming for slices about 1/8 inch thick. Place the sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water to remove excess starch.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Whisk until well combined.
Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with unsalted butter. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish, followed by half of the sliced onions, half of the creamy sauce, and half of the cheddar cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
