Dough Ingredients
- 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 0.5 cup whole milk warmed to 110°F
- 0.25 cup granulated sugar
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 0.25 cup unsalted butter softened
- 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 0.5 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 0.25 cup powdered sugar
- 0.25 cup unsalted butter melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg beaten (for egg wash)
Combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar in a small bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
Melt unsalted butter in a saucepan over low heat. Mix in cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Set aside to cool.
Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Spread the chocolate filling evenly over the dough and sprinkle with chocolate chips.
Roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other to form a log. Cut the log in half lengthwise and twist the two halves together. Place in a greased loaf pan and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Brush the top of the babka with the beaten egg. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
Let the babka cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
